Famous Last Words

I realize it has been a while since I posted anything on my blog, but I wanted to start documenting little things about Austin again so I don't forget. So, I don't know how frequent these posts will be, but I am going to give it a try.

There have been a lot of times over the years that I have looked at other people and said, "My kids won't ever do that!" I have since learned that you should never say that because you will eat those words!

I came across a situation like that just last week! I have heard countless stories of things that kids have flushed down the toilet and always thought, "Now how hard could it be to keep a child out of the toilet if you just pay attention to them?" Well, now I know!

I had gone to the bathroom and, of course, Austin was running around the bathroom just waiting for a chance to get into some kind of mischief. (I also have come to understand that I lost the ability to go to the bathroom alone when I became a mother.) When I was done, I went to wash my hands. Our vanity is in a separate room from the toilet and shower, so I walked around the corner.

Austin was right behind me.

The next thing I knew, I could hear splashing. I ran into the bathroom to get what I was sure was a little boy splashing his hands in the toilet. However, what I did not count on was finding him holding my new Android cell phone over his head after just dunking it in the water!

I screamed "Noooooo!" and ran over to grab it. I dried it off really quickly with a towel and then took it in to dry it with the cool setting on the hair dryer. Austin was very proud of himself and pranced around me looking so innocent! (But I know he was gloating inside!)

Thankfully, the phone is still working, but I am not sure how long my luck will run. That is the last time I let Andrew talk me out of buying a warranty!

OK, so I was reading the blogs I enjoy when I came across a great knock knock joke over at Heather's blog, Not a DIY Life. I cracked up as I read it to myself. Then, I read it to Andrew and continued to giggle more. Then, I read it to my in-laws and had to stop a couple of times to compose myself so I could continue. My favorite is "consumption"...you'll see what I mean! So, enjoy!

An Exciting Weekend

I just finished ordering new cell phones for Andrew and I. While this may seem like a common event, it is the reason behind these orders that make this story worth blogging about.

You see, I was sitting around Saturday morning in my big fluffy robe that Andrew bought me for our anniversary a few years ago, when I spilled something on it. So, I decided that I would wash it and Andrew's robe and the few dirty towels I had. I thought it would be nice for him to come home to a freshly cleaned robe! (He was in Atlanta all week and came home Saturday night.)

So, when it came time to put them from the washer to the dryer, I got all but Andrew's robe out and noticed something sitting in the bottom of the washer. You guessed it...my cell phone!

I had accidentally washed my cell phone which had been in my robe pocket all morning! While this proves to be an inconvenience for anyone, it was really a problem for me because we recently got rid of our land line and switched to using just our cell phones.

So, not only was I without a cell phone, I was with out a phone at all!

No way to reach the outside world!

And I'm pregnant!

And paranoid!

So I decided I would go over to my parent's house to use their phone to contact Andrew in Atlanta and figure out what I should do. I hopped in the shower to get ready. When I was done, I reached out for my towel and realized...I had forgotten to get a towel...because I had washed it with my phone!

So, I had to get out of the shower dripping wet and freezing to get a towel out of the closet.

Then, I reached for my robe...but it was not there either! That's right...in the dryer! I decided right then and there to throw a little temper tantrum!

I spent the entire afternoon getting a phone I could use (my smartchip still worked, so I put it in Nancy's old phone until I could get a new one). By the time I got home, I was worn out.

So, today I have ordered a new phone. I will have to re-enter all of my contacts because, of course, they were stored on my phone, not the smartchip. Oh, the joys of losing your mind to pregnancy hormones!

First Day Embarrassments!

I found this in my archives. Apparently, I wrote it about a year ago and never posted it. So, I thought I would go ahead and put it up now. It is pretty funny. Remember, this was written a year ago and I did not change any of it.

First days can always be crazy. No matter what first they are--first day of school, first dates, first day on the job--there is always a learning curve. My actual first day at University Hospital was not that bad. My first day of seeing patients, on the other hand, was a different story altogether!

When I got my patient assignments, I only got two to start with, both of which I had evaluated with Jen (another PT) the day before. I double checked that the first one was on the 5th floor, only to be corrected that it was the 3rd floor. Ok...I can do that. So I set off for the surgical ICU on the third floor. About 30 minutes later, I ended up in the ER and had to ask how to get back to the main part of the hospital! I had never found the SICU, but had wasted 30 minutes looking for it! So, I bit back my pride (a little late, probably) and paged Jen to ask for help in finding it. When she called me, all I heard on the other side of the line was laughter. :) It is a good thing that I learned how to laugh at myself a long time ago! So, she came up and showed me where it is. Actually, the first door I had gone to was right, I had just mistakingly thought it was locked.

OK. So, I got my big "first day" blunder out of the way early. I was good to go. Right? Wrong. Later that morning, I had seen my two patients and was ready for more. So, I went back down to the rehab department to work on documentation. While there, I paged Jen to see who she wanted me to see next. Very soon, I got a return page telling me that I had paged her to the Emergency Code Activation line! Oops! When I looked at the phone next to the computer I was working on, I realized that from the angle I was looking, the words "Code Blue" were hidden and all I could see was the number- the one you use to report an emergency such as- you guessed it- a code blue. I felt so stupid!

Blunder number 2 out of the way. Smooth sailing the rest of the day...right? Wrong again! Around 3:30, I got a page from one of the other PTs asking for someone to help her walk a patient who had a lot of lines to worry about. Let me explain how the pages work. They are text pagers and you can page a person individually, or you can page either the entire department, OTs only, PTs only, or the techs. The pager I had used to belong to one of the techs, so it also gets the tech pages. I had forgotten this and thought she must have sent out an "all page." So, not having a lot left to do, I sent out an all page in reply stating that I could help her. I realized a little too late that it had probably been a tech page and none of the therapists who got my page knew anything about what I was talking about. They must all think that I am such an airhead!

Jen told me that she is going to keep track of all of the crazy things I do and then down the line, she can pull them back out to tease me. Something tells me that before all is said and done, she will be able to write a book! Thankfully, the last few days have been pretty embarrassment-free. I think I am starting to get the hang of things. The learning curve can be painful some times, can't it?

30 Weeks and Counting!

OK, so it is not really that bad! But, seriously! This boy is stubborn!

I am 30 weeks now (as of yesterday) and I have noticed some big changes recently:

Austin has taken up permanent residence under my right ribs. It is a constant battle where I push him down and he kicks me and moves right back. We are definitely going to have to work on obedience!

Also, as I mentioned earlier, my back is really starting to hurt...specifically next to my right shoulder blade. Interestingly enough, that is also where I occasionally get a tingling/pins-and-needles or numb feeling. He must be stepping on a nerve when he is lodging himself under those ribs! It is like he is seeking shelter or something! Anyway, I digress.

I have also started to get bigger in the stomach. Still, I get so many people saying how tiny I look. While I know they mean this as a compliment, I feel like I am huge...and I love it! When I say huge, I know I am still not as big as a lot of women get, but I have been a lot bigger than I ever got with Sydney for the past couple of months. Also, I lost 10 pounds when they put me on the low carb diet, so that slowed things down a lot. Add to that that Austin is up in my ribs and does not leave me much room for much food, and I really have not gained that much weight. So, that is all baby. And believe me, he is taking every bit of that room for himself and then some. (In case you have not noticed, I am quite obsessed with the fact that Austin is taking over more of my body than I had anticipated!)

He is really starting to get big. They will measure him again Monday, but the last time, he had gained about a pound in three weeks. I know he is getting big because in the past week, I have started feeling actual body parts. I have not been able to completely identify them, but there are definite contours there that were not there before! You can really see my belly move a lot more now, too. So, something is definitely changing there.

Anyway, I am still planning on posting about my showers soon. It will probably be after this weekend. I am planning on working on the nursery and putting everything away this weekend. I should be more organized and prepared to blog about it then. Until then, you will have to use your imagination! :)

TGIF- Random Fun Sites of the Week

Well, the first week of 2008 is almost over! I hope that it is a blessed year for everyone!

I have come across so many cool things on the web, I don't know where to start. I guess the best place to start is where I found a lot of the cool things.

StumbleUpon- This is a website that allows you to select preferences- things you are interested in looking at on the web. Then, you download the icons to your toolbar. With the click of the icon, you literally "stumble upon" a website that fits one of your preferences. I have to be honest. A lot of them are not that interesting- at least not to me. But, some of them have been great.

One thing I "StumbledUpon" was this hilarious article about Guidelines for Cats. Even if you are not a cat lover, you may still find this funny! I know my cats have definitely read it. That, or they wrote it!

Finally, I found a cute game you can play online. It is a take-off from Pac-Man called Pac-Xon. Take a few minutes to take a crack at it!
