This morning, I finished A Redbird Christmas, by Fannie Flagg. I enjoyed it so much, that I though I would put up a book review about it.
Without giving away anything important...the book begins with Mr. Oswald T. Campbell in Chicago during a blizzard. Mr. Campbell finds out that he has emphysema and unless he moves to a warmer climate, he will not live long...and probably will not live long no matter what.
So, Mr. Campbell, a recovering alcoholic with no real connections and nothing really to live for, puts his affairs in order, and through an unlikely series of events, ends up renting a room from an old military nurse and her crazy mother in Lost River, Alabama. Responsible for this arrangement? Ms. Frances Cleverdon, a widow who is set on pairing Mr. Campbell up with one of the many single/widowed ladies in town. (Preferably, her sister, Mildred!)
Throw into the mix a spunky, wounded redbird (you can't tell him he is a cardinal because it would only go to his head), an adorable crippled and abandoned little girl, a feud with the Creole's across the river, and a not-so-secret society, and you have a book that will keep your heart warmed and the laughter in the air all the way to the end.
A Redbird Christmas is a quick and easy read with many stopping points along the way in case you only have a few minutes to spare. (Like if you have the book with you and want to read while you are in the drive-through line at the pharmacy or at a really long red light.) I also enjoyed the fact that there is a selection of recipes that were talked about in the book. I look forward to trying Frances' Macaroni and Cheese and Patsy's favorite gingerbread. With the exception of a couple of cuss words (why do they have to throw those in?), the book is very clean. I would highly recommend A Redbird Christmas to anyone and definitely plan on reading more of Fannie Flagg's writings!
I would love to pass this book along in a giveaway, but I borrowed it from my sister-in-law, so it is not mine to give.
Let me know what you think. Have you read A Redbird Christmas? Did you like it? Have you read any other of Fannie Flagg's books that you would recommend? How about the review? Do you like book reviews? Do you find them helpful for finding new books and authors? Would you like to see more book reviews?

Did you know that this was one of the book club books at church? I think in December...I never got around to reading it...maybe I will!
Yes, actually that is how I found out about it. I had planned on joining the book club, but did not get it read in time...obviously!
Sounds like a good book for right before bed. I'm always in the market for some easy, not-too-stressful reading for bedtime.
I posted Andrew's pie recipe on my blog today - I hope he's OK with that! I hope it's not a secret recipe!
I've read Welcome to the World, Baby Girl but that's all by Fannie Flagg.
Amy- Did you like them?
