While so many others were watching the Oscars Sunday night, or watching NASCAR, I was having a great time at Martina McBride's Waking Up Laughing Tour! My sister-in-law and brother-in-law gave us the tickets for Christmas and I was totally shocked and excited! Andrew's parents also bought tickets and went with us.
The concert started at 7:30 and the first act was Lady Antebellum. They are a newer country group that I had not heard of before. I really was not very impressed by them. The sound was really loud, which normally would not bother me that much. But, the problem was that the mix was off so badly that you could not really hear or understand the lyrics over the music. It really was kind of a jumbled mess, to be honest. They sang about 20 minutes.
They were followed up by Jack Ingram. His mix was much better, but I just really don't like his songs. I mean, the music is good and he was a funny guy, but his lyrics leave a lot to be desired, in my opinion. They really lift up the thinking of worldly things such as adultery and divorce and excessive drinking. All of which happens, I understand, and are not to be judged my me, but also should not be glorified. Just my humble opinion.
But, finally, around 9:00, the real show began. Martina came up through a hole in the stage (something I called during the first opening group) and started the concert off with one of my favorite songs, Anyway. She sang a good variety of older and newer songs, including Happy Girl, With a Broken Wing, Independence Day, Love's the Only House (combined with I Have Been Blessed), I Didn't Promise You a Rose Garden and You Ain't Woman Enough to Steal My Man. She even told the story that Loretta Lynn had told her behind that last song.
I think the hardest part of the concert for me, which I had anticipated would be difficult, was when she sang In My Daughter's Eyes. But, to make it harder, she followed it with Concrete Angel and Independence Day! Talk about tear-jerking!
We really had a great time! I am just amazed, not only at her incredible voice, but also by her passion and intensity she puts into the songs. You can tell that she really means what she sings. She talked about how she found some of her songs and it is obvious that she puts a lot of thought and time searching for just the right songs for her albums. Well, it pays off! I can't believe that we don't have her newest album, yet. The key word there is yet! We will definitely be getting it soon.
Of course, at the end, she got a standing ovation and came back to do an encore. What was it, you ask? Well it was nothing like the encore she did at her Christmas concert a couple of years ago (an a capella version of Oh Holy Night!- absolutely amazing! The crowd was absolutely silent when she finished. She was almost completely off the stage when the applause finally erupted. It gave me goosebumps). But, I digress. This encore? Her guitar player came out and started playing a rock riff. Then she came out with the rest of her band and sang...are you ready for this?...Don't Stop Believing by Journey! (She was better at our concert, but this will give you an idea.)
From there, she went right into Hit Me with Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar!
Can you believe it! It was awesome!
Needless to say, I had a great time at the concert and can't wait to get to see Martina McBride in concert again!

I love "Don't Stop Believin'"! Did you take the video? If so, you guys had great seats!
What a fun and meaningful experience. I love when I find songs with meaning, those that touch my heart.
Sounds like it was great, and fun, and loud, and emotional...and what more could you want from a concert?? I'm glad you got to go!
While it's true that I don't typically listen to country, I have always loved Martina McBride. She's great! Glad you had such a good time at the show.
No, we did not take either of the videos. I found both of them on YouTube to give a taste of what she did. I would have liked to have been able to make a recording, though. It was a great concert.
I don't know if you read The Pioneer Woman Cooks, but she just posted an apple dumpling recipe just like yours!

Hey, Tiff - a friend of Sandi's & mine is starting an online Bible study group. I'm planning to participate, and it looks like we'll be tackling Job first!

Sounds like a fun concert! I would love to see her one day.
I saw her in concert once before she was a headliner... she opened up for a couple other groups back then. Anyway, she's great! :)
